Center in development
In 2008, a group of leading community radiation oncologists, Boca Raton Radiation Oncology Associates and ProCure announced the joint development of a proton-treatment center in south Florida. The center is likely to be built in Broward or Palm Beach County.
The need for a center in Florida is great. The American Cancer Society estimates that there were more than 113,000 new cases of cancer in Florida in 2010. About 60% (67,800) of cancer patients will receive radiation therapy at some point in their treatment and, using conservative estimates, about 30% (20,000) of those patients could benefit from protons. Most centers can only treat about 1,400 patients a year, illustrating the need for more centers.
